Friends of Sabotage Reviews

Just want to donate? However small the amount, we’ll subscribe you to our newsletter, and list you as a friend on the website (unless you’d rather not).

First of all, we would like to thank everyone who has made Sabotage Reviews what it has become over the last seven years: a vital component of the literary ecosystem. This is completely due to the volunteer editors, reviewers, readers and cheerleaders, who have kept us going throughout. You’ve all contributed to making Sabotage Reviews a place for reviewing works largely ignored elsewhere. The Saboteur Awards, as a natural extension of our website, have sought to celebrate the oft-overlooked too: the spoken word nights that add salt to the weekly grind, the reviewers who dissect strange and beautiful objects, the strangely stitched pamphlets, the unclassifiable. We do this because we love these things, because we believe that cheaply produced does not equal cheaply thought.

However, money has become an issue as we have grown. Our website is creaking at the edges from the hundreds and hundreds of reviews, and the Saboteur Awards have become too large to handle with a skeleton crew. Last year, Claire Trévien led a review-a-thon to fund the awards, but has not been able to replicate the effort this year. We’ve spent the last few months going back and forth, some options seeming too expensive and time-consuming to solve the ‘here and now’ issues. Many of you volunteered your time and expertise – and we are so grateful to you, thank you!

So this is our compromise. We are going to run the Saboteur Awards this year as before, with a few changes as suggested by you which we’ll share in another post soon. We are also going to be growing our physical presence in two ways: events, and publications. As some of you have seen, we launched a call to submissions recently for essays on spoken word cultures across the world. We hope this will be the start of a series. We also want to start running events that promote the winners and shortlisted people involved in the Saboteur Awards – perhaps even a festival if time allows!

In order to fund the Saboteur Awards, we are launching a Friends’ Scheme. Each subscription level comes with its own advantages as you can see below.

In the interest of transparency, to make some basic updates to our website and run the Saboteur Awards like last year, we would need at least 35 people to subscribe to the Pebble membership (or 23 to the Boulder membership). That’s our target – should we exceed it then two things will happen. A) You’ll see some updates to your benefits to include some extras and B) I will update you, depending on the amount raised, on where the money is going. Our wishlist includes things such as: paying our editors a lump yearly fee, paying writers for some feature articles, paying reviewers, etc.

Update: we have reached our target! Thank you so much everyone! The initial extra has gone to paying the editors a fee of £30 as a thank you for all their work. Extra money will be corralled towards the Verbs that move mountains production costs and extra events we plan to run as complements to the Saboteur Awards.
